Crohn’s/Colitis Management Protocol
This protocol aims to leverage the potential benefits of HBOT to mimic wound healing processes, focusing on enhancing tissue repair and reducing inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. As with other experimental uses of HBOT, this treatment should be integrated into a broader management plan that includes medical therapies, dietary adjustments, and possibly surgical interventions. For individuals diagnosed with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis who are experiencing active inflammation or are in recovery from recent flares, and who are cleared for HBOT by their healthcare providers. Athletic Performance and Recovery + HBOT
GOAL
Accelerate healing of intestinal lesions similar to wound healing, and reduce inflammation associated with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
HOW IT WORKS
Stem Cell Release: Stimulates the mobilization of stem cells, which can aid in the repair and regeneration of damaged intestinal tissues.
Cytokine Reduction: Aims to decrease inflammatory cytokines, potentially reducing the chronic inflammation characteristic of inflammatory bowel diseases.
Collagen Formation: Enhances the production of collagen, which is crucial for the structural repair of any damaged intestinal lining.
ALL THE DETAILS
-
Pressure Level
1.4 or 1.5 gradually increase to 2.0 ATA using Supplemental Oxygen.Session Length
Each session lasts approximately 60-90 minutes. -
Intensive Phase
Daily sessions, 5 days a week, totaling 40-80 sessions. The range depends on patient response and severity of the condition. (Modified: 3 days per week 40-80 sessions )
Maintenance Phase
Depending on outcomes, maintenance sessions may be scheduled less frequently (e.g., 1-2 times per week) to manage symptoms or maintain remission.
-
Hydration: Ensure adequate hydration to help manage potential side effects of HBOT and support overall health.
Nutrition: Dietary management focusing on reducing bowel irritants and supporting intestinal health with a nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory diet.
Stress Management: Incorporate strategies to manage stress, which can exacerbate symptoms of inflammatory bowel diseases.
-
Enhanced Tissue Repair
The increased oxygen delivery can significantly improve tissue oxygenation, which is crucial for healing damaged tissues in the gastrointestinal tract.Anti-inflammatory Effects
Reduction in inflammation may help in managing flares and maintaining remission in chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. This HBOT protocol for Crohn’s and colitis aims to utilize the therapeutic benefits of increased atmospheric pressure and oxygen to mimic the body’s natural wound healing processes, supporting tissue repair and reducing inflammation in the intestines. Coordination with gastroenterologists and a comprehensive healthcare team is crucial to ensure that HBOT is safely and effectively integrated into the patient's overall treatment plan.
-
Red Light Therapy (RLT) before Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) can be helpful because it primes the body’s cells and circulation, making them more receptive to the oxygen boost that comes in HBOT.
RLT duration before HBOT: 10–15 minutes full body, or 5–10 minutes targeted.
Frequency: 3–5x/week or combined with HBOT sessions
Timing: Ideally right before the HBOT session so vasodilation and mitochondrial activation are at peak.
Wavelengths:
660 nm (red) – skin rejuvenation, inflammation
850 nm (near-infrared)– deeper tissue, muscle, brain, jointsHere’s why:
1. Increases Blood Flow Before Oxygen Loading
2. Stimulates Mitochondrial Energy Production
3. Reduces Pre-existing Inflammation
4. Enhances Nitric Oxide (NO) Release
5. Prepares the Nervous System- Relaxing -
Pre-Session Recommendations
Light, balanced meal 1–2 hours prior
No alcohol or heavy caffeine same day
Hydration encouraged
Ear clearing check
Do not use if you have any of the following:
Uncontrolled seizure disorders
Active upper respiratory infections or sinus congestion
Uncontrolled hypertension
Untreated pneumothorax
Claustrophobia (without desensitization or sedation)
Clients should start hyperbaric oxygen therapy with a protocol package for comprehensive initial treatment, then continue with a maintenance membership for ongoing support and benefits.
Individual outcomes from the therapy may vary. Each person’s response to treatment depends on a variety of factors including their unique health condition and overall wellness. While our experienced staff is committed to providing personalized support and guidance throughout the therapy process, we do not guarantee the cure of any medical condition.
Our goal is to assist clients in achieving relief from symptoms and to support overall healing and recovery. Clients should consult with their healthcare provider before beginning treatment and disclose any health concerns during their sessions.
By participating in hyperbaric oxygen therapy at ELEVATE SONOMA, clients acknowledge understanding of these terms.
If you're unsure where to begin, schedule a free consultation with one of our team members. This allows us to understand your needs and goals and tailor a protocol specifically for you.
